Carriers Face Congestion in Aftermath of Harvey: Transport Topics

While ports across Texas resumed operations, the intermodal chain continued to face challenges in Hurricane Harvey’s wake, reports Transport Topics.

After closing to brace for the powerful hurricane, ports at Corpus Christi, Galveston and Houston returned to normal operations as of Sept. 5.

Freight carriers are adjusting routes and facing heavy congestion due to such obstacles as flooded roadways and a shortage of drivers left by record-breaking rainfall from the storm.

Further complicating recovery, the many cargos originally destined for the affected ports diverted elsewhere.

Anheuser Busch among Houston’s leading importers of containerized cargo (according to Descartes Datamyne’s Port Report 2016), reported shipments delayed in the Gulf as of Sept. 1, but expected to reach their destinations by Sept. 7.
